The Four I's of Oppression

 The Four I's of Oppression

For this blog post I will be focusing on reflection. Ideological, institutional, interpersonal, and internalized oppression—the Four I's of Oppression—offer a structure for comprehending the ways in which systemic oppression functions and appears in society. I would like to focus on the idea of Interpersonal oppression and my personal connections with interpersonal oppression. The Interpersonal oppression happens in environments where people act unfairly toward others because of unconscious stereotypes. This is a place for analysis because it invites us to consider how we might unintentionally contribute to oppression and to critically examine our own behavior. Developing understanding and empathy is crucial to establishing supportive settings in the community, at work, and in educational institutions.

I am a waitress in a small town diner-like restaurant. I have had many instances where I was treated poorly, as many do when working with the public. I am often treated like I am stupid as I am " Just a waitress", according to some customers, yet I am a waitress who is using the money to pay for school so that I can further my education and be more than "just a waitress", even though that is never a bad thing. The text states "When expressed across groups, interpersonal oppression can normalize biased behaviors and violence. Such actions seem justified, normal, or reasonable–especially if oppressive values are tacitly or explicitly supported by the group." I reflected on this quote as I have been in situations where people have said " We are not going to tip as other people tip so you it will even out in the end." Which is not true as my company pays me $3.50 an hour, and this comment has become so normalized that it is common to not receive a tip. I feel as if the public does not treat servers with respect as it is a job where you do not necessarily need an education, and it is easy to find a serving job. These individuals are people too and should be treated as people as this is there career. This can be related to the individuals like minorities that are treated differently/ as if they are uneducated because of the way they were born.

  2. I used this same video for my post! It actually helped me understand the content better in comparison to the reading.
I agree, certain fields are looked at as less than and what's crazy is most of us only take these jobs in hopes of getting a better one. Starting at the bottom is a real thing but those with that privilege will never understand that or even if they do, it's easy to forget.
